HOW IT WORKS

Directed by Fab Lab Founder, Professor Neil Gershenfeld of the Center for Bits and Atoms at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Fab Academy Diploma utilizes a distributed education model which provides a unique educational experience. Each week, participants are required to independently plan, execute and document their progress on a new project, allowing them to eventually develop a personal portfolio of technical accomplishments. Subsequently, participants are evaluated on the skills they have acquired rather than on the time spent or credits earned.

Participants are to attend global lectures that are broadcasted every Wednesday from 9:00 AM until 12:00 PM EST. The lectures are recorded and made available to learners throughout the semester. Additionally, participants can use the digital fabrication equipment at the lab and receive personal help with their projects two to three days per week.

Faculty at the Fab Academy Diploma are responsible for delivering video lectures, supervising academic content, and directing research efforts; while instructors are responsible for offering guidance in the lab, developing and disseminating educative material, assisting with projects, and ensuring that students have gained requisite skills.
